Malawi

Introducing Malawi......

For the majority of travellers Malawi is Lake Malawi which is not surprising considering it covers around ¾ of the country. Overlanders spend time here on the shores of the lake and holiday makers stay at Hotels scattered intermitadly along its shores. But Malawi also offers a smattering of game viewing and sporting activities such as scuba diving and cycle trails making it a country more than worthy of a visit.

Amongst its treasures are its people who battle on even though Malawi has recently seen poor economical times and offer some of the biggest smiles you’ll see on your travels. This makes it a genial and relaxing country to visit with travellers often using it as a point to reflect on their journey having viewed its neighbours great game parks and iconic sights as Malawi sits in the cross roads from the plains of East Africa and the mighty nations of Southern Africa.

Highlights of Malawi

The lake

The south - Lake Malawi National Park covering the southern tip of the lake known as Cape Maclear offers travellers the best chance to see the many colourful species of fish in its clear waters by snorkelling or diving and even kayaking. On land the birdlife is prolific with those crazy opportunists, Baboons, visiting many a traveller up close.

In the north - Even though the southern section of the lake tends to be the most popular many overlanding companies and backpackers visit the ever popular lake side towns of Nkhata Bay and Kande Beach in the north with their established dive centres and the chance to jump on the boat that traverses the length of the lake and into Tanzania.

The Zomba plateau

Leading up from Malawi’s first colonial capital Zomba this region of flat topped mountains is a walker’s dreamland. Lush vegetation offers walkers and cyclers the chance to wander amongst a land of waterfalls and lakes as a breath of fresh air from the usual game viewing and water based activities that the rest of the country offers.

When to visit

Malawi is a year round destination with specific seasons attracting travellers based upon the activities they choose during their visit.

Game viewing is at its best in the gentle rain months of November and December. Scuba diving is popular between August and December when the lake seems to be at its clearest and for those visiting Malawi at its greenest between February and April the countries flowers and birds should impress.
