Introducing South Africa

A visit to South Africa offers Australian travellers a varied holiday experience, combining a sense of familiarity with new and different experiences. In fact, it offers so much for travellers that it is best to choose two or three regions to visit rather than rushing around and spending all your time in airports or driving.

Its cities have plenty of attractions and are easy to navigate if self driving, and there are many reliable tour operators offering day trips if not. And the good news is that the Australian dollar is strong against the South African Rand, so your budget will stretch to give you a sense of grandeur.

Safari game viewing in South Africa is experienced in either state-run national parks, or in private game concessions operated by game lodges. In the Kruger region, the boundary between the majority of the private concessions and Kruger National Park is unfenced, so the animals can move freely and without restriction. Vehicles are required to stay on pre-established roads while on safari in national parks, while rangers in private concessions are free to drive off track to follow animals. The ability to drive off track means game can often be experience within quite close proximity to animals.

Activities in South Africa range from diving with sharks near Cape Town, visiting the township of Soweto in Johannesburg, cycling through the Cape's vineyards on wine tasting tours, to visiting the rural towns of the exposed inland plains of the great Karoo.

There’s certainly never a dull moment on a trip to South Africa.

Here’s a small taste of what South Africa has to offer travellers.

Cape Town and surrounds

Cape Town has undoubtedly one of the most dramatic settings of any city in the world. This along with its interesting attractions makes it a visit worthy of several days if time permits. Backed by the flat topped Table Mountain it is easy to spend a day just browsing the city and heading by cable car to its peak. Then there are those sights that tell stories of its history such as visiting Nelson Mandela’s cell on Robben Island, hearing about the perilous shipping route around the Cape of Good Hope and the French and German immigrants who made the wine regions of the Cape world famous to mention only a few.

Jo’burg and nearby

Once seen as a stopover point since the FIFA World Cup Jo’burg has crept back onto the ‘worthy of a couple of days’ list. The township of Soweto is on the top of the list with days trips into this world within a city offered by members of its community and based on showing travellers the lifestyle of those not as fortunate as themselves.

A morning’s drive from Jo’burg Sun City is seen as a place for relaxation, great golf and a little tipple at the casino for locals and travellers alike. A kin to a block of the Gold Coast placed in a national park allowing it to offer game viewing its certainly unique and very popular for those wanting to unwind at the beginning or end of their travels.

Game viewing

The Kruger National Park - South Africa actually offers some of the most impressive game viewing on the continent. Its most famous game park, The Kruger N.P., was Africa’s first land intentionally blocked off to view game and remains State run. Within its boundaries and in recent years since the removal of the fence between the park and neighbouring private concessions over 150 species of mammals roam with the Big 5 often sighted. Foreign travellers tend to stay in private lodges with their own concessions where they are offered the best game viewing opportunities and looked after by the most professional rangers in the country. Those on tighter budgets can stay at State run accommodation or in nearby towns and take day trips into the park as self drive or guided tours.

And the rest.....

There are of course many alternative game reserves throughout South Africa. Some privately owned and some State run. Areas such as Madikwe and Makutsi offer malaria free regions popular with families and the ever popular Elephant based Addo near Port Elizabeth is another family friendly find.

The Garden route - The drive from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth (or P.E. as its known) is a popular route for self drive and touring. It not only offers beautiful blooms in spring from which it gets its name but a host of sights. Town such as Hermanus, thought to be one of the best places to Whale Watch in the world and the coastal treasures of Plettenberg bay, Mossel Bay and Knysna offer respite from sightseeing along the route while towns like George where you can join in the fun of trying to ride an Ostrich add to the fun that this path offers the traveller.

The most important thing to realise is that even though its appears to be a country of cities to visit and regions to see South Africa’s game allows it be a truly African experience for travellers. By combining its cultural aspects, great coastline, vibrant cities and game parks you have one of the world’s great all rounders when it comes to travel.

When to visit

South Africa includes such extreme diverse landscapes as the southern reaches of the Kalahari Desert and the notorious windblown cliffs of Cape Horn. Its summers are warm and winters quite mild.

Game viewing – Its eastern parks are its most popular game viewing areas with winter offering the chance to see more game as little rainfall creates drier conditions which draw wildlife into water holes provided by lodges . Mosquitoes also take a hike during this time of the year making travellers less vulnerable to Malaria.

The Cape – Further south this region attracts high rainfall and cooler conditions in the winter but it’s not too cold to visit. The Garden route famous for its namesakes blooming season is at its best between August and October and the population of visiting whales usually make their appearance between August and October.
