Introducing Uganda

As they say in Real Estate – position, position, position. Uganda’s location straddling East and Central Africa allows it to offer the best of both worlds. In its southern and western regions it offers travellers the chance to chase chimps and visit rare Mountain Gorillas and in its east and north it offers a selection of national parks whose plains are the home to predators and grazers traditionally seen in nations further east.

Add to this the chance to challenge yourself to some extremes sports in Jinja and allow yourself the time to make a difference by volunteering to assist one of its fledgling charity networks and your experience of Uganda becomes complete.

Highlights of Uganda

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

Any forest that is named impenetrable would surely deter travellers from entering its thick jungle. However inside this forest lives one of the world’s most endangered and yet inviting animals – the Mountain Gorillas. With around 1/3 of the population of the 700 Mountain Gorillas left in the wild Bwindi offers travellers a rare opportunity to spend time sitting with families of Gorillas as they go about their daily lives. An experience understandably full of superlatives which don’t even come near to describing how it feels to spend time with these endearing creatures.

In recent times the Gorillas aren’t the only primates attracting travellers here with species such as the Golden Monkey and Chimps adding a faster dimension to primate watching and travellers often choose to spend a few days here in search of them all.

Rwenzori Mountains National Park

Simply known to most as the Maintains of the Moon this section of the Great Rift Valley now borders the D.R.C. This is a region where lush jungle meets Mountains and the result is a mist shrouded mystery as you drive through equatorial forests clinging to the side of snow capped peaks as high as 5000 metres.

Jinja

It is water that brought people here centuries ago and water that still brings people here now. Located near the point where the White Nile empties into Lake Victoria Jinjas newest attractions are physically extreme sports. From high grade white water rafting to quad biking to Bungee jumping into it the Nile is the source of great adventure still.

For those with gentler pursuits in mind Jinja is an interesting town with an unusual Asian feel from its railway past and today it is also encouraging travellers to spend time and effort on assisting its people to build a better life here by volunteering in its community projects.

Kibale Forest National Park

As its name suggests this National Park is a forested section of the Rwenzori Mountains. Its famous for its primates, in fact they say it has the largest concentration of primates in Africa, with its chimps who are fast and fun to find as its central attraction.

Lake Mburo National Park

Encouraged to canoe and walk in this park travellers often get closer here to animals than in many other parks. Canoeing in its papyrus swamps allows you to approach the animals silently and will enough hidden safety to get close with disturbing them allowing a unique snap shot of their daily routine.

When to visit

Offering much lusher vegetation than its eastern neighbours Uganda is a nation full of jungles, lakes and mountains. The rains here between March and May and again in November only add to its beauty and fill its rivers making adventure activities even more extreme.

The Gorillas and other primates – They aren’t called Mountains Gorillas for nothing. Living around 2000 metres and upwards the Gorillas inhabit forested regions that are covered in mist and attract plenty of rainfall. Avoiding the rainy season isn’t essential as visits can be made year round.
