Zimbabwe

Introducing Zimbabwe . . .

It’s no secret that Zimbabwe’s recent political problems and its president Robert Mugabe have gravely affected this once popular travel destination. The poverty which has existed in much of Zimbabwe in the last decade has brought some travel based infrastructure to its knees and many tour operators have pulled out of the region in protest or simply due to lack of numbers. This is a real shame to say the least as Zimbabwe offers travellers much to see.

In recent years most travellers visit Zimbabwe as overlanders or as individual tourists travelling to Victoria Falls. We hope that some of the money spent on tourism filters through to those who need it most in Zimbabwe and that those of you that choose to still visit this beautiful country are able to support those operators who are desperately trying to provide work for the people of Zimbabwe.

Highlights of Zimbabwe

Victoria Falls

At a width of over 1.5 kilometres the Falls create the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia as a crevasse cut out over centuries by the Zambezi River. As a total entity they are best viewed from above in an aircraft or micro light or from their latest viewing platform which is actually by sitting in the rock pools positioned on the edge of the cliff as the river flows over its edge.

But the best way to see the Falls is to walk amongst them especially at their fullest. You’ll get wet but you’ll certainly experience them at their grandest as you pass along the walkways purposely built to get you as close as possible to the falls themselves.

Choose a time to visit according to your expectations with the wet seasons providing one length of Falls and the dry offering ribbons of Falls running over the exposed rock face.

On the Zimbabwean side of the Falls travellers stay in the town of Victoria Falls or nearby which is serviced by the Victoria falls airport. The town abounds with tour operators offering travellers the chance to white water, body surf or bungee drop into the Zambezi River with wildlife experiences varying from Elephant back safaris, walking with lions to canoe safaris and sunset cruises.

Hwange National Park

Only an hour south of Victoria Falls Hwange is Zimbabwe’s largest wildlife park and is still a safe option for travellers.

Although fairly dry it is the Elephants of Hwange which are its most impressive sight with herds of over 100 a common sight. Walking tours with rangers are offered here as well as scattered viewing platforms with nearby private lodges offering night drives for optimum predator spotting.

The Matobo Hills

Referred to as the best view in the world by Diamond barren Cecil Rhodes The Matobo certainly is an unusual area with its rocks and boulders offering a reason to visit this edge of the Kalahari. In fact he was so in awe of its beauty that he is buried here. For us mere mortals we visit to view the early Bushmen cave paintings and to join Mr Rhodes in his awe as we sit and watch the sun set in this unique land.

When to visit

Zimbabwe is a year round destination with winter considered better for game viewing in general and summer for lush vegetation which makes it a more attractive self drive and tour option. Its main attraction Victoria Falls is worth using as a consideration for when you choose to visit as its water content does affect it dramatically.

Victoria Falls

During the rains – Visit this region between March and May and you should see the Falls at their fullest. The rains that usually start around December fill the Zambezi and as it flows over the sheer cliffs and becomes Victoria Falls it literally does thunder. However that amount of water creates mist and you’ll be competing with a visual cloud of mist to view the falls up close.

At their best – Visiting in July or August is often thought to be the best time to visit. There’s still plenty of water but getting up close and having clear views is all but guaranteed.

In the dry – Some travellers prefer October through December at the end of the dry when you can see the falls as ribbons of water cascading down open cliff faces rather than torrents but be aware that their full force of nature will not usually be on view.
